Appointed Muster Master of the Red Squadron of Their Majesty’s Fleet Imployed in the Present Expedition under the Command of the Rt. Honorable Edward Russell ” 10 May 1692. Signed by “the commissioners for executing the office of Lord High Admiralty of England.” Responsibilities and instructions for Timewell spelled out in elaborate detail in these six closely-written pages. Signed by six Lords of the Admiralty – Charles Cornwallis (great grandfather of William [friend of Lord Nelson]and Charles Cornwallis [commander at siege of Yorktown]), H, Lowther, Ri. Duslow, Robt. Austen (1642-1696), H. ????, and Falkland (Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount of Falkland, and for whom the Falkland Sound, and then, ultimately, the Falkland Islands were named). • ADS, St. James (UK), 2 Jan. 1704. Copy of document signed by nine military leaders. The document recommends Her Majesty (Queen Anne) to attack while she holds a point of advantage, and to do so needs rapid and effective recruiting: “… Directions will be given by our very Lord his Grace ye Duke of Marlebrough Captain Generall of Her Majesty’s Forces to ye officers to attend att your present sessions that knowing how you distribute your selves they may be ready with ye least trouble possible to you to receive ye Recruits that shall be raised this being a service so absolutely necessary for carrying on ye war….” Lower left corner torn where addressee information is, but “____Duke of Bedford, ___of Middle__” is visible, presumably Wriothesley Russell, Duke of Bedford, Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Bedforshire and Middlesex from 1680 to 1711. Verso docketed with “Coppy of the Letter from the privy Councell.” • Printed form with “Navy Yard” at top, and dated 1868 – to be signed by line officers of the navy at their respective bases, and submitted to the Sec. of Navy requesting a pay increase. They note that their pay is determined by a bill passed in Congress in 1835, thirty-three years earlier, setting their pay scale, with no increases other than those going along with increases in rank. They note that higher ranking officers have had pay increases, and lower ranking personnel were making as much or more than these line officers because of their pay increases over the years. • Broadside, 6 x 9.5 in., with two nautical poems/song lyrics on the sheet, The Minute Gun at Sea and The Anchor’s Weigh’d. Surrounded by elaborate scrollwork. Andrews, Printer, New York. These were often printed and sold by street vendors for a few pennies. Ca. 1840s • Broadside, 9 x 14 in. With title “An Answer to the infamous Hand-Bill Which was Read by Lieut. Gen. Rook, on Monday, the 22d of May 1797, to the Troops Under his Command at Bristol.” The broadside begins: “Lieutenant-General Rooke having had the Goodness to read to us an infamous Hand-bill, pretended to be an Address from our Brother Soldiers, but which we are convinced is the Production of some designing Villains, who wish to overturn our excellent constitution, under which we have so long lived happily ; … [we] cannot pass over in Silence such atrocious Endeavours to subvert Order and Discipline…. We, the Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates of the Royal Bucks or King’s own Regiment of Militia, do most solemnly promise … that we will use our utmost Endeavours to find out some of those Villains…” Signed in type in three columns by 63 non-coms, also on behalf of their respective companies. Mounted on larger sheet, otherwise excellent. • Nast, Thomas. The Fight at Dame Europa’s School: Showing how the German Boy Thrashed the French Boy; and how the English Boy Looked On.
