(12+1) 25-32 10 33-34 . . ] (1/1r title and text, 1/1v benedictions, 1/2r calendar, 1/8r table, 1/9r text, 20/10 blank). 340 (of 341) leaves (without 20/10 blank). 28 lines. Type: 1:111 . G, 2:111 . G. 1- to 3-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue, capital strokes and underlining in red. (A few wormholes at beginning and end, marginal tear on one leaf just touching edge of text, some marginal soiling, 24/12+1 spotted.) Contemporary Mainz blindstamped brown-stained pigskin over wooden boards [Kyriss 160, localized near Mainz, Schunke assigns to the Carmelite convent at Mainz], tooled with an eagle, swan, unicorn, agnus dei , and crowned M with initials i n v t, two fore-edge catchplates, those on upper cover chased to crowned M, vellum sewing guards (rebacked preserving original backstrip, some worming, without clasps). Provenance : invocation to the Virgin Mary written in a contemporary hand on 1/1v, early manuscript notes - Ad Vicaria[m] Sancti Nicolai in Capella on front fly-leaf -- Henricus Hule de Wetter (manuscript inscription at end) -- Ludovicus Spulman (inscription recording Hule de Wetter's bequest to him) -- Victor Klemperer (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THE MAINZ BREVIARY, and one of very few books printed at Marienthal in the 15th-century. The Brothers of the Common Life, led by Domprediger Gabriel Biel of Mainz, established a monastery at Marienthal in c.1444. Influenced by developments in Mainz, the Brothers installed a printing press at Marienthal, creating one of the earliest monastic printing shops. This work is printed in two gothic typefaces - the larger of which (111 . ) is very similar to the one used by Ther Hoernen at Cologne. HC *3862; BMC II 547 (IB. 9703); GW 5392; Goff B-1169.
