English, brass plaque engraved 'THE EXCHANGE TELEGRAPH CO LTD PATENT', and numbered 1426, on a cast iron base finished in black enamel, brass lacquered case containing electromechanical mechanism
The Exchange Telegraphic Company - Established in March 1872, commonly known as Extel, was formed with the specific purpose of delivering financial and business updates directly from the London Stock Exchange and other commercial markets to its subscribers. The company deployed ticker tape telegraph machines in various establishments such as offices, gentlemen's clubs, and banks, ensuring a continuous flow of commercial information.
In 1876, Extel expanded its services to include a parliamentary service, followed by a general news service in 1879 and a legal service in 1891. The company's remarkable success led to the opening of ten branches outside London by 1906.
Continuing its growth and enhancement, Extel achieved greater efficiency and introduced a faster financial service in 1907. By 1913, the company had extended its reach to operate a worldwide news service, with a dedicated sports service added in the 1930s.
Throughout its history, Extel, a name widely adopted for the company in the 1950s, evolved into a prominent news agency, delivering financial information and associated services, solidifying its position as a leading player in the industry.
