Binding : contemporary German blind-stamped half pigskin over wooden boards, the leather tooled with quadruple fillets and leaf ornament, the stamp not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung , but the binding now attributed to the Periwinkle Bindery, ?Ulm, (cf. Donaueschingen sale catalogue, Sotheby's London, 1 July 1994, pp. 306-307); single brass fore-edge clasp, vellum manuscript pastedowns from a 15th-century Latin document naming Johannes Wellinger, old spine labels (rubbed, few wormholes in upper cover, some signatures sprung). FIRST EDITION. Before turning his great talent to imaginative literature and the creation of his Narrenschiff (see following lots), Brant had trained in law at university. Although Furter is mentioned as a printer in documents dating from 15 January 1483, the present volume is only the second book signed and dated by him, following an edition of Panormitanus printed after 1 April 1490. HC 3725*; BMC III, 781 (IA. 37760); BSB-Ink B-814; GW 5070; Goff B-1078.
