Brahms begins with praise of Simrock and his relations with him -- 'Seit längster Zeit sind Sie der musterhafteste, beste Verleger, und ich bin nicht musterhaft dankbar ergeben'; nevertheless, the letter continues with ruminations on the difficulties of the financial relationship between composers and their publishers ('das leidige Geldverhältnis, wie es zwischen Musikern und Verlegern leider noch üblich ist'), and the childish status to which it reduces the former, uncertain whether they are exploiting their publishers, or being exploited, with Brahms wondering why their relations cannot be like those between writers and their publishers: 'Wir Musiker werden darin wie Kinder und Unmündige behandelt, wir wissen nicht im geringsten, was und wie eigentlich bezahlt wird, ob wir beschenkt werden oder schenken, rauben oder beraubt werden ... Warum können wir Musiker nicht das gleiche Verhältnis zu den Verlegern haben wie die Schriftsteller?'. The letter goes on with reference to his recently-delivered Piano Concerto no.2 (mentioning a fee of 9000 marks), and the Nänie ; the letter concludes with reference to the impending divorce of Joseph Joachim, hoping that details will not come before the public, and opposing a public appearance of Amalie Joachim. Published in Briefwechsel (1917), 10, pp.185-8, with the omission of the concluding passages concerning the Joachims.
