BRADWARDINE, Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury (ca 1290-1349). Geometria Speculativa . Edited by P. Sanchez Ciruelo (1470-1554). Paris: Guy Marchant 20 May 1495. 2 o (274 x 204 mm). Collation : A-C 6 D 4. 22 leaves, the last blank. 50 lines. Gothic types 5:200 (first line of title, first and fourth lines on 2a), 4:76. Capital spaces, nearly all with printed guide letters. Printer's device on title, woodcut diagrams in outer and lower margins (some cropped). (Repair to blank margin of title, tiny wormhole in outer margin.) Modern limp vellum; cloth folding case. FIRST EDITION, with the reading "impresse" for "impressa" in the last line of the colophon and with the verso of C3 printed. Bradwardine was called "Doctor Profundus" due to his extensive learning, and was one of the earliest English mathematicians, writing four works on the subject. He was professor of theology at Oxford, and died as Archbishop of Canterbury. In this work, Bradwardine focuses on the important connection between mathematics and philosophy, and even selects his mathematical material to highlight its philosophical importance. Matters such as the horn angle, the incommensurability of the diagonal square and the puzzle of inequality of infinites appealed to his philosophical tendencies. These passages were later cited as early examples of the philosophically-tuned mathematician by Luis Coronel and John Major. BMC VIII:61; Goff B-1072; HCR 3712; GW 5002; Klebs 208.1; Oates 2959; Pellechet 2812; Pr 7997; Smith History of Mathematics I:236.
