BRADDOCK, EDWARD, 1695-1755, Major General, Commander of British Forces in the French and Indian War . Letter signed ("E Braddock"), as Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in America, to Governor [Robert H.] Morris of Pennsylvania, Williamsburgh, [Virginia], 10 March 1755. 1 page, 4to, 224 x 184mm. (8 3/4 x 7 1/4 in.), neatly backed with old paper. VERY RARE. GENERAL BRADDOCK PREPARES FOR HIS FATAL EXPEDITION INTO THE WILDERNESS AGAINST THE FRENCH AND INDIANS An important letter in which Braddock, who had arrived from England in February to oversee the defense of the colonies from the French and Indians, calls a conference with various colonial governors to plan a joint strategy for the defense of the exposed frontiers: "Ten days ago I sent an express to [Massachusetts] Governor [William] Shirley with orders to him to meet me at Annapolis in Maryland and have desir'd Mr. [James] Delancey [Governor of New York] to accompany him thither: If the Affairs of your Government will possibly admit of your leaving it at this time I must desire you to join them that I may have an opportunity of conferring with you upon the Measures to be pursued upon the present occasion. The Governors of Virginia and Maryland will be with us...." At bottom, he adds: "Pray forward ye inclosed [no longer present] to Governor Delancey." Braddock, a career officer of the Coldstream Guards and a stern disciplinarian, "wielded greater military power than any man had ever enjoyed before in America, and his meeting in April with five colonial governors marked the nearest approach to colonial unity...for more than fifty years" ( Dictionary of American Biography ). Enlisting the young Virginian George Washington as aide-de-camp, Braddock led a combined force of British regulars and provincial troops deep into the wilderness and across the Alleghenies to attack the French Fort Duquesne. On 9 July, Braddock's columns were unexpectedly attacked by French, Canadians and Indians concealed in the woods and in three hours of bloody fighting nearly half Braddock's force was killed or wounded, while Braddock had four horses shot from beneath him. Severely wounded, he was carried on the retreat in a litter, but died four days later, murmuring, "We shall better know how to deal with them another time." Braddock's letters are exceedingly rare: no other letter has been offered at auction since 1972, according to American Book Prices Current .
