Contemporary tree sheep, morocco lettering piece (binding rubbed). "THE WORK OF A MAN WHO EXAMINED CAREFULLY INTO THE HABITS AND CHARACTER OF THE INDIANS OF THE UPPER MISSOURI" (Field) FIRST EDITION. "Brackenridge gives an account of the fur trade, principally of Manuel Lisa's operations, and describes the expedition to the Yellowstone in 1807, the formation of the Missouri Fur Company, and the expedition to the forks of the Missouri. The second part of the above, Journal of a Voyage up to the Missouri River , describes Brackenridge's trip up the Missouri with Lisa to a newly established post of the Missouri Fur Company, upstream from the Mandan villages" (Wagner-Camp-Becker). The Louisiana Gazett e published a series of Brackenridge's essays describing the Louisiana country.
