BOURGEOIS, Pierre, Déclarations de certain Anagramme et Emblème , in French, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER AND VELLUM, [10 January 1628]. 110 x 78mm. 64 leaves. Autograph manuscript, dated and signed by the author in several places, with TWO FULL-PAGE MINIATURES ON VELLUM , the first emblem a river view with a dove perched on a golden bough bearing the legend ' N’est dure en sa Vie ', the second a woman holding a sun, a pair of scales and a mask, the legend: ' En vertu sans Idée ' (the first miniature rubbed). Contemporary natural vellum binding with punched gilt decoration (worn). Provenance : Phillips MS 850 bookstamp. Beginning with a dedication to Damoiselle Suzanne de Vérite , the author explores the meanings embedded in the first emblem – the olive tree, the golden branch and the dove – then goes on to transform Suzanne de Vérite into the anagram Vertu sans Idée , the emblem marking the beginning of this section represented by the woman standing amongst flower beds.
