BOULENCOURT, Le Jeune de]. Description générale de l'hostel Royal des Invalides. Paris: Gabriel Martin for the Author, 1683. 2 volumes, including plate volume, 2° (text: 430 x 285mm; plates: 503 x 414mm). Engraved title vignette, three headpieces, one tailpiece and three initials, 14 plates and plans (1 folding plate on 4 sheets; 3 folding plates on 3 sheets; 4 folding plates on 2 sheets; 2 double-page plates; 4 single-page plates). (Text volume without frontispiece, light soiling, some clean tears to the large folding plates). Contemporary French speckled calf gilt, French Royal arms on covers (extremities worn). Provenance : William Clark (armorial bookplate in text volume). An unusual format for this finely illustrated description of the Hôtel des Invalides. The plates are more usually found bound with the text, on 18 leaves, lettered A-S, with the artist's and engraver's names. The present set of plates is titled but has no lettering or artist/engraver's names. The building was commissioned by Louis XIV built to house wounded military veterans to the design of Libéral Bruant and modelled on the Escorial. Cf. Berlin Kat. 2476.
