Provenance : William Clark (armorial bookplate in text volume). An unusual format for this finely illustrated description of the Hôtel des Invalides. The plates are more usually found bound with the text, on 18 leaves, lettered A-S, with the artist's and engraver's names. The present set of plates is titled but has no lettering or artist/engraver's names. The building was commissioned by Louis XIV built to house wounded military veterans to the design of Libéral Bruant and modelled on the Escorial. Cf. Berlin Kat. 2476.
