BOTERO, Giovanni (1540-1617). Della ragion di stato libri dieci, con tre libri delle cause della grandezza, e magnificenza delle città . Venice: Giolito de' Ferrari, 1589. 4° (212 x 159 mm). Collation: * 8 A-Z 8 . 192 leaves. Italic and roman type. Woodcut historiated initials from several sets, head- and tailpieces. (Very light dampstain in first few leaves, some light spotting.) Contemporary red morocco, central gilt arms of a Spanish nobleman on front cover and device with motto ("Revolta Foecundant") on back cover, gilt spine, gilt edges (very discreet repairs to spine and one corner). FIRST EDITION, containing the second edition of Delle cause della grandezza e magnificenza della città . Botero wrote his treatise on government as a refutation of Machiavelli. He argues that in government honesty can never be sacrificed to the end goal and injustice is never advantageous. Della ragion di stato was immediately reprinted at Rome, Turin, and Milan, and translated into several other languages. In his treatise on the magnificence of cities Botero sets forth ideas on population that are now seen as precursors of the Malthusian principle. Adams B-2548; Gamba 1271; Kress 178.
