BOSSU, JEAN BERNARD Nouveaux Voyages dans l'Amérique septentrionale, contenant une collection de Lettres écrites sur les lieux, par l'Auteur, à son ami M. Douin... ci-devant son camarade dans le nouveau Monde. Amsterdam [i.e., Paris]: Changuoin 1787. 8vo, 190 x 120 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.), late eighteenth-century half calf, rubbed, upper inner hinge weak, small tears to free endpapers, occasional slight discoloration; folding chemise and half morocco slipcase . FIRST EDITION, half-title, 4 engraved plates, one folding, after G. de St. Aubin, half-page engraved arms of the dedicatee. Field 158; Howes B-627; Sabin 6470; Streeter sale III:1520. Despite the identical title, this is an entirely different work from Bossu's Nouveaux Voyages of 1768, being an account of a later voyage to Louisiana, his third, undertaken in 1770, during which "he revisited his old friends, the Arkansas Indians, and on their behalf made a mission to the Caddos and Attakapas, and then returned to France in 1771. Most of the letters are dated from the 'Arkansas post' (Streeter sale). The present edition is rarer than the earlier work, and was never translated into English.
