(born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1938) Peinture acrylique blanche sur tissu rayé blanc et rouge December 1970, white acrylic paint on cotton cloth with white and red stripes, alternating and vertical, each 8.7 cm (± 0.3) wide. 150.5 x 141 cm unstretched Estimate upon Request This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity (Avertissement) which will be delivered by the artist in the name of the new owner. All the works by the artist executed from 1968 onward are accompanied by a certificate Provenance: Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris Private Collection, Italy Sotheby’s London Sale L14023, 1 July 2014, lot 108 Literature: Annick Boisnard, Daniel Buren tome IV 1970–1972, no. T IV 88 (illustrated, published on www.catalogue.danielburen.com) Maison Française Paris no. 375, March 1984, reproduced in colours on the catalogue cover (…) Maybe I am the only artist who insists on this condition because all the art that was produced from the beginning of time is declared to be autonomous. And for good reason, because if the artist does not believe in his work’s autonomy it is not that interesting. But I take the liberty and risk to say – my work is not autonomous. My work is a part of everything around it and it has the power to transform everything around it.
