BORJA, Juan de. (1533-1606). Empresas Morales. Prague: Georgius Nigrinus, 1581. 8 o (178 x 137 mm). Engraved title and 100 engraving emblems, ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND and rubricated in red. (Title cropped with gutter remargined, some tears affecting text, including B3 with internal chip affecting text, B4 torn and repaired, X4 with marginal chipping.) 17th-century Spanish limp vellum. Provenance : acquired from Menno Hertzberger in 1965. FIRST EDITION. Borja was of noble birth, the third son of the fourth Duke of Gandia. His diplomatic career began in 1569 when he became Philip II's ambassador to Portugal. He served as ambassador to the emperor Rudolph II in Prague 1576-1581, where he produced this unique work of literature, the first treatise on emblems by a Spaniard. Palau 33112; Praz p. 281.
