Boris Lovet-Lorski American, 1894-1973 Polynesian Woman Signed Lovet-Lorski along right thigh at rear Bronze Height 14 3/4 inches Provenance: Private collection, Westchester Thence by descent to the current owner Literature: Martin H. Bush, Boris Lovet-Lorski The Language of Time, Syracuse, New York, 1967, p. 26, illustration of another example Although Boris Lovet-Lorski sculpted the likenesses of four American presidents as well as other personalities of note, he remains best known for idealized sculpted female nudes such as the present work, the stylized proportions of which epitomize the modernist aesthetic of thw Art Deco period. Born in Lithuania and trained in architecture at the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, Lovet-Lorski immigrated to America, becoming a citizen in 1925, the year of his first one-man exhibition. His distinctive approach to the human form as seen in the elegant, enigmatic Polynesian Woman, melded aspects of Archaic, Byzantine, and Asian figural traditions. C
Light wear, notably on the back, including a faint scratch on left shoulder.
