Collation: a -o 8 p 6 (a1 r title S H S V Chi de arte matematiche ha piacere , a1 v table of symbols, a2 r text, incipit: Ben che numero di maistri assai sufficienti si ritruovano , p6 r table of contents, p6 v Ma limpressor de augusta Errardo experto di lopera presente stampatore ... Nela inclita cita de venetia a çorni. 2. augusto. 1484. fu imposto fine ala presente opera ). 116 leaves only (of 118; lacking b1.8). Gothic types 4:76 (text) and 9:130 (headings). 36 lines and foliation. White-on-black woodcut initials (6-13 lines). Arithmetical calculations set and printed as marginalia, as well as within the text in a variety of shapes. Woodcut diagrams. (Some foliation numerals cropped, damp-staining in places.) 18th-century Italian half sheep (binding slightly wormed). Provenance : Maria de Ruha (early inscription); Sir George Shuckburgh (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION of an important Renaissance handbook of arithmetic for merchants. The author was a mathematician from Venice. Because of their practical nature, all early editions of such texts are RARE.
