Wood for the Reading Society, Benevolent Society and Sunday School of Bury, Lancashire, largely from Benjamin Crompton of 37 Fleet Street, Bury ('Printer, Bookseller, Binder, Stationer, and Music-Seller'): purchases for the Reading Society (running from 1810 to 1825) including (in chronological order) "Crabbe's Poems 2 vols" (the first purchase, for 10/6 on 13 January 1810), "Scotts Lay" (10/6 on 24 February 1810), Marmion (12/- on 30 May 1810), "Southey's Madoc 2 Vols 12mo" with Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent" (14/- and 4/- respectively in July 1811), [Washington Irving's] "Salmagundi" (10/6 on 4 November 1811), "Childe Harold" (12/- on 9 June 1812), "Crabbe's Tales in Verse" (12/- on25 February 1815), Rokeby (14/- on 1 May 1813), "Coleridge's Remorse" (3/- on 17 June 1813), Corsair (15 April 1814), "Malthus on the Corn Laws" (2/- on 28 May 1814, bought with "Ode to Napoleon" and Southey's Thalaba), Bride of Abydos (5/6 on 12 March 1814), "Waverly 3 Vols" (one guinea on 24 December 1814), "Byron's Hebrew Melodies" (5/6 on 2 December 1815), "Coleridges Christabel" (4/6 on 1 June 1816), "Childe Harold, Canto III" (5/6 on 14 December 1816, bought with "Warden's Letters from St Helena", "Scott's Minstrelsy" and "Shaw's Waterloo", one of several on the recent battle), The Prisoner of Chillon (5/6 on 3 March 1816, bought with Tales of My Landlord and "Franklin's Correspondence"), "Lord Byron's Manfred" (5/6 on 20 October 1817, bought with "Koster's Travels in Brazil"), "Child Harold 4th Canto" (12/- on 3 July 1818), "Franklins Life 3rd Volume and Works" (3 guineas on 17 November 1818), "Ricardo's Proposals" (4/6 on 4 July 1819), "Wentworth's New South Wales" (12/- on 29 December 1819), "Night Mare Abbey" (6/6 on 23 February 1820), "Oxley's Journal N. Byron" (15/- on 11 December 1824), and many periodicals such as The Quarterly; purchases for the Benevolent Society (running from 1806) including a good many plays and a quantity of music and songs, "British Poets" (at £21-17-0), cyclopaedias, "Female Quixote" (3/- for the book, 1/6 for binding), histories, "Teignmouth to Wordsworth", "Burns' Works", etc.; purchases for the Sunday School including "270 Portraits purchased from Jas Westell, of Rochdale", "paper for 40 bags", "Music 'Lord have Mercy &c'", "2 dozn Copy books", "1 dozn Watts Catechisms", "100 Labels of 'Approbation'", and further printed books; the bills pinned into a large folio volume (those for the Benevolent Society and Sunday School reversed at the end, although the categories appear to intermingle), vellum wrappers, upper cover inscribed "Accounts of Reading Society/ Benevolent Society/ Sunday School", dust-staining to wrapper, light spotting elsewhere, but the receipts overall in fine and fresh condition, folio, 1806-1826
