Other deviations from a Paris Calendar, although not designated as major feasts, are almost all feasts of Breton saints. They include Winwaloe (3 March) Guenael (3 November), Paternus (16 April), Brioc (30 April), Primael (15 May), Donation and Rogation (24 May), Thuriaf (13 July), Cognogan (15 October), Guenal (3 November), Tugdual (1 December) and Maudez was added at 18 December. John C. Jackson: inscription on f.1 '?Iste Liber pertinet ad Johan C.Jackson 1849. The English notes on the paper endleaf identifying the saints from the Calendar may also be in his hand. ILLUMINATION: It has been pointed out that manuscript illumination in Brittany in the early part of the fifteenth century showed the clear influence of artists who had travelled from Paris: F. Avril and N. Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France 1440-1520 , 1993, p.175. And the compositions and borders of the present manuscript do broadly comply with designs and components found in books painted in the capital around 1400, or even earlier. But they are presented with a lively freedom of handling and an admixture of elements -- from ram's head to cockerel to profile king -- that reveal their origin away from a centre where Books of Hours were routinely produced, and the results are charming and vital. While the archival researches of Diane Booton have brought to light the names of 12 people working in the book trades in 15th-century Quimper none was recorded as active before 1426: 'Notes on Manuscript Production and Valuation in Late Medieval Brittany', The Library , 7, 2006, pp.127-153.
