BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Northern Italy, last quarter of the 15th century] 89 x 70mm, cut down from 124 x 85mm. 157 leaves, COMPLETE (lacking only blank folio 17). Collation: 1-4 10 5 8 6-7 10 8 8 9-15 10 16 10 +2 (2/6-10 blank, 7 cancelled). 13 lines, written space: 62 x 42mm, written in brown ink in an elegant upright humanist bookhand, rubrics in red, headings in red capitals (the ink often faded), 7 three-line initials, burnished gold infilled in blue or red with gold tracery on contrasting red or blue ground, 5 LARGE, BUT FOLDED, DECORATED PAGES within interlacing white vine-stem border on coloured and gold ground surrounding a 4-line gold initial (4 historiated) on blue and red ground, heading in gold on a purple or red plaque, and border roundels (these leaves mostly very rubbed and worn). Late 16th century reddish-brown morocco gilt (minor wear on spine, catches present but lacking clasps). In velvet covered slipcase. PROVENANCE: The manuscript is difficult to localize. It contains many North Italian saints, such as SS Ambrose of Milan (in red), Bernardinus of Siena (in red), Louis of Toulouse for Perugia (in red) and Antonius Abbas of Gubbio (in red). DECORATION: This is on leaves that have not been cut down and have been folded to the size of the rest of the book. They are however mostly rubbed or flaked. The subjects are: folio 20. Historiated initial of Virgin and Child, border containing 5 roundels of prophets and a space left blank for an armorial folio 80v. Border containing two roundels, one of fruit, the other the head of a skeleton folio 122. Historiated initial of King David in border the head of Goliath folio 146. Initial historiated with a Cross. Figure of Christ Ecce Homo in lower border. folio 151. Historiated initial of Pentecost. Miniature of Christ in lower border
