BONIFACE VIII, Pope (1235?-1303). Liber sextus Decretalium (with gloss of Johannes Andreae). Mainz: Peter Schöffer 9 January 1476. Royal folio, 381 x 272 mm. (15 x 10 11/16 in.), nineteenth-century vellum over pasteboards, edges stained red, single paper index tab, cropping to border decoration on opening page and to foliation and marginalia throughout, minor worming to lower gutters of first and last few leaves, just touching one letter of penultimate leaf, old staining to gutter of fol. 17/1r, occasional slight marginal soiling . Collation : [1-3 10 4 12 (11 + 1) 5-7 10 8 10 (9 + 1) 9 12 10-11 8 12 6 13-16 10 17 4]. 162 leaves, without signatures or foliation. Types: 5:118G (text), 6:92G (commentary). Double column. 66 lines commentary surrounding text. Chapter headings and colophon printed in red. 2- to 4-line initial spaces and blank for opening 12-line initial. Rubricated: Lombard capitals, some with marginal flourishing, and paragraph marks supplied in alternating red and blue ink, foliation, headlines and line fillers in red. Fol. 1/1 illuminated with the initial in blue with red and white penwork on a burnished gold ground, green and red floral extensions, quarter page-border of a leafy vine and flower sprays in red, green, blue, maroon and gray with burnished gold and silver infill, an armorial shield at center.
