BONET, Paul (1889-1971) -- Georges BLAIZOT (expert). Bibliothèque Paul Bonet . Paris: Tournon et Cie for Ader and Picard, commissaires-priseurs, 22-23 April 1970. 4 o (269 x 190 mm). Color frontispiece, black-and-white plates, text illustrations. BRILLIANT "SCULPTED" BINDING BY PIERRE-LUCIEN MARTIN, Paris 1974, for B.H. Breslauer: black boxcalf, multiple intersecting panels of various shapes sunk into the covers and inlaid with white, grey, blue and red calf, smooth spine lettered in gilt, scarlet suede doublures and endleaves, signed by the designer and dated on turn-ins, gilt edges. Chemise and slipcase. NO. VIII OF X COPIES ON VéLIN FORT PAPER, reserved for the friends of Paul Bonet and containing a facsimile of Max Jacob's final letter to Bonet (limitation statement on half-title written and initialled by the collector). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 26 original photographs of bindings not reproduced in the catalogue (autograph list by Bonet inserted). Four autograph letters signed by Martin to Breslauer, dated 19 January to 31 March and discussing this binding, are loosely inserted. With the death, in 1985, of Pierre-Lucien Martin (b. 1913), a period of French bookbinding design initiated by Pierre Legrain and of which Martin became one of the foremost exponents, has perhaps come to an end. In contrast to artists such as Legrain and Bonet who were purely designers, Martin was a practising bookbinder for many years, until he himself had his bindings executed by such brilliant forwarders as Constant Dreneau (b. 1907), and finishers such as Guy Raphaël (b. 1915) who probably executed the binding here exhibited..." Bonet gave me this special copy of the sale catalogue of his books, all bound by himself, on the occasion of my visit in January, 1971. I asked him to bind it for me in a certain style. When he died, less than two months after our meeting, he had not yet made a design for it, but had drawn up a list of the photographs to be included, headed "Bibliothèque Paul Bonet -- Ex. VIII/X, reliure pour B.H. Breslauer", with a note at the bottom "Reliure dans l'esprit de celle de Lespugue" (by Ganzo, see Carnets , no. 1682). Bonet's brother had the copy transmitted to me, and I asked Martin to bind it. He told me he wanted to create a synthesis between Bonet's and his own style, using almost the same words as Bonet in 1969 when I had asked him to bind the book on Legrain. Martin added to the volume the photocopy of a touching letter Bonet wrote him on the dispersal of his library" (BBB Wittockiana 67).
