What is a SuperTuscan? The term SuperTuscan describes a top quality wine produced in Tuscany that does not follow the winemaking traditions of the region, either in the grape blend, or in the way in which it is made. The first steps included the elimination of white grapes in the red wine blend that was at that time compulsory. Next came the introduction of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot - grapes with a long history, but not commonly considered Tuscan. All of the most illustrious examples of this winemaking trend are to be found in today's sale, carefully assembled in a marvelously curated collection by our vendor, one of our generation's premier connoisseurs of Italian wine. Sassicaia My visit with the the Marchese Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta began with his explanation that his father, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta had created a vineyard at his estate in Bolgheri because he enjoyed the wines of Bordeaux, but these were not available during the Second World War. Accordingly, he planted a vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravel terraces above the village of Bolgheri. This small original vineyard was planted in 1944, and yielded its first crop in 1948. The Marchese explained that in his opinion all of the vintages ending in "8" have been very good: '48, '58, '68, '78, '88, '98, and now 2008. This site is sufficiently unique to have been given its own DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia. The climate of Sassicaia is also warm enough that the viticulturalists are customarily finished picking by the end of September. Sassicaia in most vintages is produced from approximately 85 Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 Cabernet Franc. The wine is fermented in stainless and extraction is assured through a combination of pumping over and déléstage. It is normally aged in one-third new French oak casks for up to 24 months. Average annual production is approximately 200,000 bottles.
