Engraved title with engraved portrait of Boissard on verso, 47 full-page portraits of Ottoman sultans and others within highly decorative borders. (Z2 and Z3 remargined along inner margin affecting engraved border of Z3; Gg3 and Nn1 trimmed closely touching outer margin of border, some minor offsetting.) 19th-century English russia gilt, gilt edges (light rubbing to joints). Provenance : 4th Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878, shelfmark, sale Sotheby's, 25 June 1897, lot 742); acquired from Harry A. Levinson, 1971. [ Bound with :] Pannoniae historia chronologica . Translated into Latin by Johann Adam Lonicer. Frankfurt: de Bry, 1596. 4 o . Engraved title with wide border with portrait medaillions, 11 full-page engraved portraits and 3 engraved battle scenes in text; one large engraved folding map of Hungary and Transylvania. (Lacking Aa-Ee 4 and F1-2). FIRST EDITIONS. "This beautiful book contains portraits of the Sultans from Osman I to Murad III and also includes portraits of Scanderbeg and his family, Tammas Khuli Khan, Barbarossa, Roxelana the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, and pashas of the Ottoman Empire (Cairo etc.). The portraits were engraved by Theodore de Bry after drawings by Hoefnagel who apparently took them from medals brought from Constantinople. The portraits are circular within elaborate borders composed of fruits, animals and grotesques within a strapwork frame" (Blackmer). According to the introduction, the Pannoniae historia chronologica is usually appended to Boissard's work. The map "Ungerlandts und Sibenburgen kurtze und eigentliche Abbildung" by de Bry is often lacking. Lipperheide Qb 15; Szantai Bry 1 (map).
