Engraved titles, portrait of the author (repeated in vol.II) and 198 oval portraits surrounded by decorated borders. (Some light worming to lower margin, light browning to last part.) Contemporary German calf gilt (rebacked, original spines laid down). Provenance : Ludovici Courtois (engraved armorial bookplate); Kenney Collection (bookplate); acquired from Michael Dawson, 1970. FIRST EDITION of this biographical dictionary with a fine collection of portraits engraved by Theodore de Bry with the text by Jean Jacques Boissard, poet and antiquary, one of at least four productions by this partnership. The subjects range from scholars, writers and thinkers who marked their epoch--among them Petrarch, Columbus, Dante, Ronsard, Machiavelli, Gesner, Vesalius, Mercator, Luther, Fuchs, Münster, Copernicus, Ptolemy, Brant and Alciatus--to obscure late sixteenth-century notables of Frankfurt and Hesse.
