BOILEAU DE BOUILLON, Gilles (ca 1510 -1563). La Sphere des deux mondes, composee en Francois, par Darinel, pasteur des Amadis. Antwerp: Joannes Richardus, 1555. 4° (190 x 138 mm). woodcut printer’s device on title and last leaf, 19 woodcut maps (one folding). (A few tears to lower margin of title repaired on verso, a few stains and tiny wormholes affecting text, map of Tunis P1 with small chip to corner and mended tears.) Modern vellum. FIRST EDITION . The 19 woodcut maps include a cordiform map of the world: “Universalis Cosmographia” and a rare maps of the Americas: Jean Bellère “Peru, brevis exactaque totius Novi Orbis ejusque Insularum descriptio recens a Joan Bellero edita.” The map “was popular during the middle of the sixteenth century and had great influence in showing more accurately the size and shape of the great South American continent” (World). Each map is accompanied by a curious cosmographical stanza. RARE : according to American Book Prices Current , no copy sold in the past 35 years.
