Boer War. An archive of photographs, letters, receipts, telegrams and other documents mainly relating to Captain William Stewart Dick-Cunyngham, Black Watch regiment (born 1871), but including references to Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Dick-Cunyngham VC, Gordon Highlanders, James Keith Dick-Cunyngham, Gordon Highlanders, and Captain Robert Henry Dick-Cunyngham, 21st Lancers, including a letter from the Duke of Atholl, dated 21 June 1901 to Captain William Stewart Dick-Cunyngham discussing in detail the raising and despatch of a new regiment of 221 men, other letters and receipts relating to the provisioning of the Scottish Horse regiment, photographs include a panorama of the Scottish Horse regiment on parade (faded), portraits of Captain Sir William Dick-Cunyngham, a portrait of William Henry and his grave, Lieutenant J.K. Dick-Cunyngham, a trio portrait of the Marquis of Tullibardine with Captain Arthur Blair (2nd in command) and Captain William Dick-Cunyngham (adjutant), together with two other files of Boer War letters and documents: one relating to the death in action of Corporal William Budd, 1st Battalion Scottish Guards (letter to his sister from the commanding officer, two unsent letters from Corporal Budd including one found on him at his death, and others), the other relating to Major Edward Peterkin, 8th Volunteer Battalion, Royal Scots in his duties as resident magistrate of the District of Fricksburg (1901-08), contained in three modern plastic albums (Qty: 3) The Scottish Horse regiment was formed in 1900 in South Africa during the Second Boer War by Lord Tullibardine at the request of Lord Kitchener. Tullibardine appointed Captain Arthur Blair as second in command and Captain William Dick-Cunyngham as adjutant. A second regiment was raised by the Duke of Atholl in Scotland, and saw active service in the Western Transvaal.
