BODYLINE 1932-33, M.C.C. TEAM - AUSTRALIAN TOUR - 1932-33, official team photograph of Jardine's England team, with a PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY MAURICE TATE, printed caption below, "Sydney Mail" Photo, 19.5 x 24.5 cm, board mount with printed borders, overall 30.2 x 38 cm. An attractive group portrait of one of the strongest England teams to tour Australia. Including Larwood, Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Pataudi, Allen, Voce, Tate and others; they won the series 4-1. MAURICE TATE'S PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION IN INK IS DATED APRIL 1933 and is to 'Jack, with best wishes'. The reverse bears the details 'Jack Shaffram, 7/6 Mandolong Rd., Mosman'. Maurice Tate (1895-1956), played for Sussex and was one of England's greatest bowlers. He toured Australia (3 times) and was prominent in England's defeat of Australia at the Oval in 1926 to regain the 'Ashes'. On the Bodyline tour (his last tour of Australia) his 94 n.o. against Victoria at the MCG in March 1933 was instrumental in this the first tie in Australia in First Class cricket. Tate's inscription to an Australian friend is a poignant and important reminder that he was one of a small group from Jardine's Bodyline team (the others were Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Allen and Warner) who supported Australia's condemnation of England's notorious tactics on their return to England
