L'opera, una sorta di enciclopedia di mitologia classica, è completata dal Boccaccio coll'aggiunta di un proprio dizionario di geografia classica, che brevemente descrive: monti, boschi, fonti, laghi, fiumi, stagni, paludi e mari di tutto il mondo conosciuto. Nelle "Genealogiae", scritte tra il 1350 ed il 1375 per invito di Ugo IV da Lusignano, re di Cipro e Gerusalemme, Boccaccio "si propose di illustrare con filologico rigore le notizie concernenti la paternità e le discendenze degli Dei greci e romani e di fissare esattamente il contenuto dei moltissimi miti classici" F.
