BLAEU, Willem and Jan. Nova Virginiae Tabula . Text in Dutch on verso. [Amsterdam, 1658/65]. Engraved map of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, platemark 379 x 484 mm (sheet 560 x 655 mm). Title set in a banner incorporating decorative strapwork, legend in cartouche with strapwork, royal coat of arms, scalebar and imprint within double-paned cartouche bounded by decorative strapwork and architectural elements, vignette of Powhatan and figure of Indian, colored by a contemporary hand. (2-inch tear along fold on lower margin, 2 tiny nicks on left and lower sheet edges, soft vertical crease right of center, other lesser soft creases). Matted and framed. A FINE IMPRESSION OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN MAP, MADE AFTER SMITH'S VIRGINIA . This is the second state (of 2), bearing the imprint of Blaeu. Originally issued by Jodocus Hondius from 1618-1629, the map closely follows State 1 of Smith's Virginia of 1612, without longitude and the various names added in Smith's later states (an impression of the Smith map is offered as lot 270). Upon Hondius's death in 1629, Blaeu purchased the plates and the imprint was thereafter changed to reflect the new ownership. Blaeu used the map first in his Atlantic Appendix (1630) and afterwards in virtually every edition of his atlas. The present example is extracted from either the 1658 or 1665 Dutch editions of the atlas, with the catchword ooft as stipulated by Verner. Coolie Verner, "Smith's Virginia and its Derivatives," in R.V. Tooley, The Mapping of America , 1980. WITH FINE COLORING AND WIDE MARGINS.
