BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638) & Jan (1596-1673). Novum Italiae Theatrum sive Accurata Descriptio ipsius urbium, palatiorum, sacrarum aedium, &c. Amsterdam: P.Mortier, 1705. 4 volumes, 2° (536 x 340mm). Half-title in vol.I, engraved additional titles, letterpress titles in red and black. 333 maps, town plans, bird's-eye views and plates (27 folding, 243 double-page; including 52 hand-coloured maps, 7 other plates in vol.I with some hand-colouring). (Small tears to one plate in vol.I, 2 plates in vol.IV, small repaired hole in a third plate in vol.IV, occasional light browning.) Contemporary panelled calf, spines gilt in eight compartments with raised bands, green morocco label onlaid in uppermost compartment tooled with crest of the Dukes of Leinster (rebacked and cornered, old spines laid down, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Duke of Leinster (binding, Carton Library armorial bookplate). A fine series of plates. Blaeu first issued his townbooks in 3 volumes in 1663, his heirs added two further volumes in 1682. "Petrus Mortier re-issued all the Blaeu maps in the years 1704/05 in an atlas comprising four volumes. He added many new maps of his own design, emended several of the Blaeu maps and put his name on nearly all of them. Apart from that, the old plates from the Blaeus were retouched. Mortier published his atlas in a Latin, French and Dutch version": (Koeman I, p.332). Koeman I. Bl 91-94. (4)
