wool flag with hand-sewn linen stars in ring with one in center and 4 in corners of canton, sewn linen hoist with attached strings and manuscript paper tag that reads Recruiting Flag/1st Regt. New York Engineers/belonging to H.H. Trenor, 33" x 62.5", PLUS a cut out red wool 10th Corps badge, 3" diameter, PLUS a brass Civil War officer's frock coat button, .75" diameter, PLUS a small brass GAR button, PLUS a meerschaum pipe carved in the form of an eagle claw clutching the bowl of pipe with make-do brass stem, 3" long, PLUS a brass 1 cap badge, PLUS black-painted pine candle box with sliding lid in which these items were found with period paper label on one end reading Henry H. Trenor/1st N.Y. Engr's, 11.25" x 7" x 5" high. Included with the lot are 14 documents. Ten of these are military orders and accounts dating between November 1864 to June 1865. Most concern the repair of defenses at Bermuda Hundred and along the line for the Union push to Richmond. The last couple items concern the return trip, ordering the 2nd and 3rd battalions to Rocketts (?) at 7:30 AM on Saturday (July 1) to embark on steamers for New York, with the last being a list of other packages being shipped home by the men (eg. 2 boxes from Geo. Cottrell to Mrs Cottrell, New York City, (value) $28.00). There are two programs from GAR reunions, 1904 and 1908. The last two relate to the pension for Mr. Trenor's widow: the application information is dated 1914, but the final approval did not come until 1920. The 1st N.Y. Engineers Regiment contributed to the war and was engaged at Port Royal Ferry, Battery Vulcan, S.C., Fort Pulaski, Ga., James Island, Secessionville, Coosawhatchie River, Caston's & Frampton's Plantations, Morris Island, siege of Ft. Wagner, bombardment of Ft. Sumpter, Seabrook, John's Island, Olustee, Fla. and Morris Island, before the final siege of Petersburg and push to Richmond reflected in these documents. Condition: 1st scattered moth holes, still VG; 2nd some moth damage still VG; 3rd-6th VG+. Documents show minor toning, expected folds.
