Bishop of Nocera) Vitæ Illustrium virorum, 2 vol. in 1, fourth collected edition, the first edition to include the supplement on the lives of the Turkish sultans, first title within woodcut architectural border, 29 large woodcut portraits within ornate architectural borders, lower corner of first title torn away, with very minor loss to border, some marginal water-staining to first few sigs., some spotting and light browning, [Adams G667; Atabey 503; Blackmer 691], Basel, Petrus Perna [second vol. Petrus Perna & D.Henricus Petri], 1578-1577 bound with Giovio (Paolo, Bishop of Nocera) Elogia Virorum bellica virtute illustrium [and Elogia Virorum literis illustrium], 2 parts, titles within woodcut architectural border, 2 woodcut portraits of the author, 128 and 62 woodcut portraits within ornate architectural borders respectively, lacking final f. of index in part 2, rather browned, [Adams G645 & G648], Basel, Petrus Perna [and Henricus Petrus], 1596-1577, together 3 works in 1 vol., contemporary vellum, rebacked in later vellum, double morocco labels to spine, head of spine worn, covers with some worming, folio. *** The eleven portraits of Turkish sultans are based on a collection of portraits presented by the Turkish Admiral Barbarossa to Virginio Orsini in Marseilles, which later came into the possession of Giovio. The portrait of Mehmet II is supposed to be based on that by Gentile Bellini which Giovio also claimed was in his own collection.
