BINDING -- MOREAU, Pierre. Les Saincts Prieres de l'ame Chrestienne, escrites & gravées aprés le naturel de la plume par P. Moreau Escrivain Juré . Paris: chez l'autheur, 1644. Small 8° (150 x 92mm). Engraved throughout, title within architectural border, dedication to the Queen, 30 pages with illustration of flowers, religious images or emblems, the remainder with calligraphic text within engraved borders of flowers, fruits, cornucopia, arabesques, masks etc. (Some leaves slightly finger soiled and spotted.) 17th- or early 18th-century French red morocco, RELIURE MOSAÏQUÉE, covers with olive morocco on-lays and decorated with pointillé and small tool scrolls embellished with silver flowers and leaves, all within gilt roll-tool border, flat spine decorated in gilt and silver in compartments, inner gilt dentelles, g.e., in brown levant morocco slip-case by Riviere. Provenance : Jeanne Vial Lenée (18th-century inscription on back endpaper). A VERY FINE BINDING in the style of Pierre Rocolet or Antoine-Michel Padeloup [cf. Esmerian Catalogue Douze tableaux synoptiques sur la reliure au xviie siècle , Annexe C], on an elegant prayerbook originally published in 1631 by the writing master Pierre Moreau and dedicated to Marie de Medici, whose arms are printed on the verso of the 25th leaf of this edition. Other copies of Moreau's work are known to have been bound by Florimond Badier Brunet III-1895-1896 describes the 1649 edition, entitled 'Devotes Prières', and mentions the editions of 1631, 1632 and the present. He also notes one other work by Moreau, and states that Moreau was the originator of matrices imitating hand-writing and was appointed 'imprimeur du roi' in 1642, printing various works in calligraphic characters.
