BINDING -- Francesco PETRARCA. [ Il Canzoniere ]. Commentary by G.A.Gesualdo. Venice: Giovanni Antonio dei Nicolini da Sabbio and brothers, 1541. 4° (215 x 157mm). (Light soiling to first and last few leaves, small neatly repaired holes in titles.) Contemporary Bolognese brown morocco over pasteboard, covers with a thin panel ruled in blind surrounding a large central gilt-tooled panel with a foliate roll border around a large arabesque plaque, a blindfold Cupid with bow and quiver of arrows at the centre of the upper cover, Fortune with a sail at the centre of the lower, the spine with three double-bands alternating with four false bands, the compartments cross-hatched in blind, edges gilt and gauffered with small knotwork tools (recased with later endpapers, ties lacking, stitching broken between signatures B and C). Provenance : Charles Ludovic Lindsay (armorial stamp, bequest to:); John Manners, 9th Duke of Rutland (Belvoir Castle library stamp, inscription noting bequest from Captain Lindsay, dated 1926). This Bolognese binding of about 1550 centres around the popular figures of Fortune and Cupid. Generally produced for students at the university, the two central figures personified love and were a reminder not to let any favourable opportunity pass. Taken together they can be read as advice to the owner to make a rich marriage. Adams P-807.
