(Bill of Rights)Journal of the First Session of the Senate of the United States of America, begun and held at the City of New York, March 4, 1789 and in the thirteenth year of the Independence of said States. New York: Thomas Greenleaf, 1789 Folio (340 x 198 mm). Some toning and scattered foxing, closed marginal tears along top margin repaired, word on pg. 115 blocked out in contemporary ink, closed marginal tears to two leaves of index, final two leaves of index in facsimile. Half calf over marbled boards; expertly rebacked to style, boards rubbed. In custom morocco clamshell case. First official publication of the working journal of the first Session of the Senate, including the Bill of Rights as originally proposed to the states for ratification and the original House of Representatives version of seventeen amendments, rejected by the Senate. The Journal covers the activities of the Senate from 4 March to 29 September 1789, a period in which numerus significant events took place, including the discussion of the proposed Bill of Rights.
