BIBLIA LATINA. With the Postilla of Nicolaus de Lyra, Additiones of Paulus de Sancta Maria, bishop of Burgo, the Replicationes of Matthias Döring, and commentary of Gulielmus Brito on the Prologues of Jerome. Edited by Paulus a Mercatello, and with additions by Franciscus Moneliensis. --NICOLAUS DE LYRA (ca.1270-1340). Contra perfidiam Judaeorum . Venice: [Bonetus Locatellus, for] Octavianus Scotus, 8 August 1489. 4 volumes. Median 2° (351 x 254mm). Collation: a 1 0 b 8 c-l 1 0 m 1 0 (8+1, woodcut) n-z 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 Aa-Dd 1 0 (a1 blank, a2r prologues of Nicolaus de Lyra, Jerome, etc., c1r Bible text with commentary surround); aa-zz 1 0 1 0 aaa-bbb 1 0 ccc 1 2 (Chronicles-Ecclesiastes, ccc12 blank); AA-YY 1 0 ZZ 8 && 8 (Isaiah-Maccabees); A-Z 1 0 & 1 0 + 1 2 (New Testament, +7r Contra perfidiam Judaeorum , +11v register, +12r printer's mark printed in red, +12v blank). 1107 leaves, contemporary blank flyleaf bound in after blank a1. 77 lines of commentary and headline, double column. Type: 1:74G (commentary), 2:130G (headlines), 4:92G (text), and a few Roman capitals in commentary, printed guide-letters. Fine woodcut David initial, 2 smaller initials, 2 full-page woodcuts, 48 other woodcuts, 4 diagrams, printer's device (Kristeller 283), 3-7-line initials in red, blue or green, some with decoration in contrasting colour, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. (Light dampstains in some extreme margins, small marginal wormtracking affecting some text, mainly in vol.II.) Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, 2 brass fore-edge catches without clasps (slight tears at head and foot of spine, some small wormholes in covers); two stamps appear to be Schwenke-Sammlung Evangelisten 34 and Blatt 128 identified as an Ulm shop, Kyriss 125, but they are not identical to the ones depicted in Kyriss. Provenance : Etton, Benedictine monastery of the BVM, and a few contemporary marginal annotations. THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED BIBLE PRINTED IN ITALY. Pollard surmised that the illustrations in this edition represented an intention to make this a luxuriously illustrated Bible similar to the Malermi Bible of a year later, a project which was abandoned ("Two illustrated Italian Bibles", The Library , 1902, pp.227-242). Instead, the illustrations here belong to the tradition of illustrations to the Postilla of Nicolaus de Lyra, and they follow closely the woodcuts used to illustrate the first printed editions by Koberger, first in the Postilla alone, and then in a Bible in 1485 (see lot 253). HC *3168; GW 4291; BMC V, 437 (IB.22834); Goff B-616; Pellechet 2347; IDL 853; IGI 1688; BSB B-463; Essling 132; Sander 988 (4)
