Initial F and border incorporating a bird, acanthus leaves and strawberries, illuminated in gold and colors BY A CONTEMPORARY FLEMISH ARTIST (on a1r, prologue), penwork initials in red and/or blue, red capital-strokes throughout. (Blue pigment in the border flaked, blank corner of first leaf repaired, marginal wormhole at the beginning, larger wormhole towards the end affecting text.) LOUVAIN BINDING FOR JOHANNES DE WESTPHALIA as bookseller: contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, sides panelled with double and quadruple fillets, the center panel diapered by triple fillets, a small star tool at the angles, the resulting compartments containing a rebus-tool (bird, letters ve, bow-and-arrow) or a wyvern, the two most central compartments each containing a bust of John of Westphalia, original headbands, (binding worn and somewhat defective, rebacked, clasps gone). Provenance : sold ready-bound at Louvain, by the prototypographer of the Southern Netherlands, Johannes de Westphalia -- contemporary markings in the New Testament for liturgical reading -- Latin annotations in some margins and on the final blank, by a late 16th-century Netherlandish scholar, citing Hebrew and Greek -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 16 April 1985. Renner's third edition of the Vulgate Bible. LARGE COPY, preserving some lower deckle edges. The rebus tool probably identifies the binder and may be interpreted as RAVESCOT, perhaps the Louvain incunable printer Ludovicus de Ravescot.
