BIBLE, New Testamemt, in English. The New Testament of Iesus Christ, Translated Faithfully into English . Translated from Latin into English by Gregory Martin, under the supervision of William Allen and Richard Brostow. Rheims: John Fogny, 1582. 4 o (233 x 165 mm). Title-page printed in red and black, ruled in red throughout. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, numerous woodcut initials. (Title slightly soiled and worn at edges, slight worming in first gathering affecting a few letters.) 19th-century vellum over pasteboard; cloth folding case. Provenance : Robert Lord Petre (1689-1713), Baron of Writtle (bookplate); Edward Francis Carry (1867-1929), President of the Pullman Company and Director of the Associated Catholic Charities of Chicago. He received two Papal honors: the Knight of Malta and a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the Roman Catholic (Douai-Rheims) version of the New Testament in English. Martin's translation adheres closely to the Latin, but freely uses existing versions. Most striking are the resemblances to Coverdale's diglot of 1538. This Rheims version exerted a strong influence on the Royal version of 1611, transmitting to it an extensive vocabulary and distinctive phrases. WITH A FINE PROVENANCE: Robert Lord Petre, the 7th Baron of Writtle was the inspiration for Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock : Robert is believed to have refused to wear a wig in the conventional way, instead spending six hours every day dressing his own hair. He caused an uproar in the family when, at the age of 20 he cut a lock from his distant cousin, Arabella Fermor, daughter of Henry Fermor of Tusmore, Oxfordshire. Pope, a friend of the family, was asked to write one of his humorous heroic verses about the incident in the hope that laughter would defuse the situation. Herbert 177; STC 2883.
