Beschreibung:

BIBLE, in Latin, with calendar, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris or Northern France, circa 1250-1270] 178 X 117mm, 596 leaves, (lacking apparently 2 leaves, ff.4 and 5, else complete), Collation is difficult as the volume is tightly bound, but seems to be 1 2 4 2 1 6 3 2 4 etc. Double column, 46 lines, ruled in plummet, justification: 117x78mm, written by two or three scribes in dark and light brown ink in a very small gothic bookhand, rubrics in red, capitals touched in red, running titles and chapter numbers in alternating red and blue capitals, two-line decorated initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork decoration, 139 LARGE PAINTED INITIALS in elaborate designs of scrolling leaves and branchwork. usually incorporating dragons or birds, original scribal corrections and 14th-century annotations in lower margins, (marginal hole in f.270; tear in F.285 with slight loss; a few clean marginal tears; small portion of upper edge of first hundred leaves incised or gnawed away). Late 16th or early 17th century brown morocco panelled in gilt, spine with raised bands in seven compartments (extremities worn). GENERALLY IN GOOD CONDITION PROVENANCE: Almost certainly made in Paris, the calendar has St.Genevieve in red on 3 January; also St.Bathildis on 30 January. 16th or early 17th century ownership inscription of 'Thaler'?, on last leaf, visible under ultraviolet light TEXT: This is a Vulgate Bible, with the prologues ascribed to St.Jerome and the interpretation of Hebrew names commencing 'Aaz apprehendes'. The books and prologues are in the usual Canonic Parisian order. The Calendar on two leaves, is not very full and has been placed between the Book of Job and Psalms on ff 230 and 231 ILLUMINATION: This has been difficult to identify as the first Genesis leaf with its initial is lacking, but it most probably came from the Grusch atelier, a workshop active in Paris between 1250 and 1270. Branner, Manuscript Painting in Paris during the Reign of St.Louis , (1977) illustrates an initial (fig.225) from the 'Dominican Compilation', very similar to those in this Bible.
