Translated and edited by Pierre Robert Olivetan, with prefaces in Latin by Calvin. Neuchatel [but published in Serrières]: Pierre de Wingle dict Pirot picard, 4 June 1535. 2° in 6s (362 x 248mm). 426 ff. 61 lines, double column. Bâtarde and gothic type. Woodcut ornamental frame on first and New Testament titles, crown and heart device on Apocrypha and below the colophon, 4-6 line initials. (A sheet of paper pasted to the title with sections excised to reveal the text of the title beneath, final leaf torn with loss of a few characters and laid down, hole in bb5 with loss of a few characters, small tears in a few leaves generally marginal and repaired, but occasionally running into the text, some wormtracks occasionally just touching the text.) 18th-century French red morocco gilt, triple fillet border to covers, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, olive morocco lettering-pieces, the compartments otherwise decorated with various small tools, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (extremities rubbed and scuffed, head of spine chipped). THE FIRST FRENCH PROTESTANT BIBLE, and the basis of all "Geneva" versions into the 19th century. Olivetan (1500-1538) was chosen by the conference of Angrogne in Piedmont (September 1532) as a suitable candidate to prepare a revision of Jacques Le Fèvre's first edition of the Bible in French, which had been published in Anvers in 1530. Darlow and Moule note that "Olivetan appears to have followed generally the guidance of Pagninus and Erasmus, using their Latin translations... he also consulted versions such as those of Luther and Bruccioli. Some of his notes are borrowed from Nicolaus de Lyra and from Erasmus' Paraphrase... Though throughout... [Olivetan].. had before him Le Fèvre's Bible, yet, in the O.T. at least, his version is practically a new translation. This is shown in a marked manner in the Psalter, which is here based on the Hebrew text, and not, as in Le Fèvre's version... on the Gallican Psalter. Graf asserts that Olivetan's marginal notes alone are sufficient to prove that he made an independant use of the Hebrew text, and did not merely rely on Pagninus. In the Apocrypha... Olivetan reproduced with slight alterations Le Fèvre's text. In the N.T. he corrected his predecessor's version of the Greek, probably following Erasmus' edition of 1527."
