BIBLE, in Arabic. The Holy Bible...in the Arabic Language . Newcastle: Sarah Hodgson, 1811. 4° (261 x 213mm). General title in English, otherwise completely printed in Arabic, xylographic titles. (Slightly browned throughout, a few spots and inkstains, fore-margin of general title frayed and repaired.) 20th-century morocco-backed buckram. Produced under the patronage of Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham, this missionary project was first undertaken by J.D. Carlyle, Professor of Arabic at Cambridge in 1795 and vicar of Newcastle in 1801. On his death it was continued by Henry Ford, Lord Almoner's Reader of Arabic at Oxford, who saw the work though the press. Darlow & Moule I, pp. 68-69. Sold not subject to return.
