Vocalised and accentuated Hebrew Bible with the Aramaic Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan ben Uzziel, the Commentaries of Rashi, Abraham Ibn Ezra, David Kimchi, Levi ben Gershom (Gersonides), Saadiah Gaon and Massorah Magna and Parva, edited by Jacob ben Hayyim ibn Adonijah of Tunis]. Venice: Daniel Bomberg, 1524-25. 947 leaves. Vol.1: 234; vol.2: 209 (complete but without last blank); vol.3: 211; vol.4: 293 (lacking: 113/1 and /8, last 2 leaves (table) and without blank 111/8). Title of each volume within an elaborate architectural woodcut border, 22 large woodcut headpieces with titles in large decorative letters. 4 vols., folio, 377 x 258 mm., 18th-century dark brown calf over wooden boards, cover with large armorial stamps in gilt, worn, rebacked, dampstaining to margins, affecting some text, 5 leaves with repaired marginal tears, 8 leaves in vol. 3 with repaired wormhole in upper margins, small piece torn from upper margin of 119/7 in vol. 4 with loss of about 20 letters in one column . The editio princeps of the Massoretic Bible edited by Jacob ben Hayyim and Bomberg's second edition of the Rabbinic Bible. Vinograd, Venice 99; Haberman, Bomberg 93; C.D. Ginsburg, Introduction to the Massoretico-Critical Edition of the Hebrew Bible, p. 956-974; Steinschneider 52; Darlow and Moule 5085; Zedner 96. Jacob ben Hayyim's own account of this great enterprise in his famous introduction to the Bible is as follows: "When I explained to Bomberg the advantage of the Massorah, he did all in his power to send into all the countries in order to search out what may be found of the Massorah, and praised be the Lord we obtained as many of the Massoretic books as could possibly be got. He was not backward, and his hand was not closed, nor did he draw back his right hand from producing gold out of his purse to defray the expenses of the books and of the messengers who were engaged to make search for them in the most remote corners and in every place where they might possibly be found". The text of this edition became the standard massoretic text for all subsequent editions. (4)
