BIBLE, Hebrew and Spanish . Biblia en dos Colunas Hebrayco y Español. Amsterdam: Joseph, Jacob and Abraham, sons of Solomon Proops, 5522 [1762]. Four parts in one volume, [10], 332 [2] pp.; [2], 350 pp., each part separately titled (title-leaves for 2nd-4th parts not included in the pagination), first title printed in red and black, Hebrew and Spanish text printed in double column. Folio, 404 x 257 mm. (15 15/16 x 10 1/8 in.), contemporary Dutch red goatskin, covers gold-tooled to a panel design with roll-tooled floral and arabesque border, large roll-tooled rococco floral and leaf inner panel with flowerpot, seashell and acorn tools around edges, at center an onlaid blue morocco gilt cartouche, the owner's name lettered in gilt above the cartouche "Isaac de Elias Lindo" on upper cover, on lower cover "Londres Anno 1768" gilt-lettered above and below the cartouche, spine gilt in 7 compartments, green calf gilt lettering-piece in the second, g.e., turn-ins gilt, blue calf doublures with roll-tooled border and onlaid red calf gilt cartouche at center surrounded by large flower tools, green moiré silk liners, marbled inner endleaves, joints and extremities rubbed, slight rubbing; occasional very slight foxing . FIRST EDITION OF THE BIBLE IN HEBREW AND SPANISH. Cowley 102; Darlow & Moule 5156; Zedner 102; not in Steinschneider or Roest. In the publishers' introduction the brothers Proops announce that they have recently purchased the entire stock of type-matrices from the printers Joseph Immanuel and Abraham Athias. The edition was financed by Abraham Mendes de Castro of Curacao, who is credited in the Proops' foreword with the idea of publishing a bilingual Hebrew-Spanish Bible. Although Bibles in Spanish had been regularly printed since the Ferrara Bible of 1553, this edition was the first to present the Hebrew and Spanish texts together.
