BIBLE, English. The Holy Bible, conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly Translated out of the originall tongues: & with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by His Maiesties speciall Commandement . London: Robert Barker 1611. Royal 2° (425 x 282mm). Engraved title by Cornelis Boel New Testament title within elaborate woodcut border, woodcut ornaments and initials. (Lacking the world map, title and first few gatherings with waterstains affecting lower and upper margins, title creased and cleanly torn at lower inner margin, small tear in 5B1 affects 5 lines, a few other minor marginal tears.) 17th-century panelled sheep over paste-board, covers partially mottled with blindstamped cornerpieces and roll-tools, spine in seven compartments, raised bands (upper cover with small crack at lower joint, edges and head and foot of spine slightly rubbed, later endpapers). FIRST EDITION of the Authorized Version or King James Bible, called the 'He' Bible for the reading in Ruth 3,15 'He went into the city'. The King James Bible set out to reconcile the versions of the Bible used by the clergy, on the one hand, and the laity on the other. The translators, who numbered more than 40, were divided into five committees based at Oxford, Cambridge and London, used the Bishops' as their basis and consulted Tyndale's, Coverdale's, Matthew's, Whitchurch's and the Geneva version. The result was a translation that remained unaltered for three and a half centuries in language remarkable for its power and beauty. Herbert 309; STC 2216; Printing & the Mind of Man 114.
