A reprint of Matthew's Bible of 1537, with the notes, etc., revised; edited by Edmund Becke. Five parts, black letter, double column, each title within composite woodcut border, woodcut text illustrations and initials, some printing in red in the preliminary leaves. Folio, 291 x 190 mm., late nineteenth-century English dark brown panelled morocco gilt, vellum linings, g.e., extremities scuffed, lacks AA1-2 and V7-8 (title/almanack, calendar January-August and two last leaves of Table including colophon), all supplied in facsimile, and blank leaf AAa8; 19 leaves at front with some remargining and occasional slight loss as far as D3, more severe remargining and loss affecting 19 leaves at end from S1 onward, some old staining. STC 2077; Herbert 74 ("This Bible contains the well-known note at the end of 1 Pet. iii on the words To dwell w' a wyfe accordinge to knowledge , in which occurs the sentence And yf she be not obedient and healpfull unto hym endevoreth to beate the feare of God into her heade, that therby she may be compelled to learne her dutie and do it. "). Sold not subject to return.
