26 original woodblocks for illustrations of natural history.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne: c.1800. Various sizes, excised boxwood blocks. As used for both small illustrations or vignettes or in apprentice carving, the collection consists of blocks mostly attributed to Bewick and his workshop. Many of the woodblocks of animals are essentially the same image found in Bewick's Quadrupeds , but laterally reversed and with some differing backgrounds (page numbers cited refer to similar published images). The Collection comprises ; 3 Woodblocks attributed to Bewick himself from Bewick’s Gleanings; "Bulldog" (p.334) and "Dalmation" (p.339) and "The Dog and the Bull" p74. [with:] A group of 18 woodblocks attributed to his apprentices or other engravers in Bewick's workshop and related to the Quadrupeds : "Holstein" (p.29); "Greyhound Fox" (p.307); "Great Mantis" (p.500); "Rabbit" (p.49); "Syrian Goat" (p.88); "Wallachian Sheep" (p. 73); "African Wild Boar" (p.167); "Ocelot" (p.222); "Flying Squirrel" (p.394); "Short Eared Bat" (p.513);"Kanguroo" (p.442); "Spotted Hyena" (p.301); "English Setter" (p.356); "Lurcher" (p. 343); "Cur Dog" (p.329); "Striated Monkey" (p.478); "Baboon" (p.62). [And:] 5 others, including 3 that are likely from Bewick's studio and the remaining 2 that appear unconnected to Bewick and his apprentices. a charming group of blocks from the master engraver and his studio. Thomas Bewick's wood-engraved art has retained its popularity through both its content and execution. In content his charming depictions of the natural world and animals which he used as vignettes for his works encapsulate a fast disappearing rural way of life. A life that was already being romanticized during the early years of the Industrial Revolution, as factories and mines spread around his home town of Newcastle. In terms of execution, his innovation in carving such hardwoods as boxwood against the grain immediately separated him from his predecessors and has continued to influence the medium to the present day. His works A History of Quadrupeds, A History of British Birds , and The Fables of Aesop are all available in modern edtitions, a testament to their enduring popularity. Provenance: The Julia Boyd collection (partial, purchased Sotheby's London, 16 February, 1960, lot 325)
