BEWICK, Thomas (1753-1828). A History of British Birds ... Containing the History and Description of Land [ Water ] Birds, Newcastle: Printed by Edward Walker for T. Bewick, 1805. 2 volumes, large 8° (248 x 160mm). Titles with wood-engraved vignettes, illustrations by Thomas Bewick (Some mainly marginal spotting and staining.) Contemporary diced calf ruled in gilt (skilfully rebacked). Third Edition. Brunet I, 839; Nissen IVB 95; Roscoe 18b, 19b. Provenance : JOHN BELL'S COPY. Volume One contains the original receipt, tipped onto a preliminary blank, dated September 30 1805, and inscribed, "the Contents for my Master. T. Bewick." John Bell (1745-1831), pioneer publisher, described by Charles Knight as "the mischievous spirit, the very Puck of booksellers." See DNB. With Aesop's The Fables ... with Designs on Wood by Thomas Bewick (London, 1818, with original receipt bearing Bewick's signature and thumbprint at the front) bound in green half morocco gilt. (3)
