BERRETTINI, PIETRO, DA CORTONA. Tabulae Anatomicae...Delineatae...a Cajetano Petrioli Romano...Notis illustratae. Rome: Antonius de Rubeis for Faustus Amideus 1741. Folio, 425 x 302 mm. (16 3/4 x 11 7/8 in.), late eighteenth-century Italian half calf and paper covered boards, spine gilt, elaborately marbled blue-stained edges, worn, upper cover detaching, lower hinge splitting, some light foxing, one plate and a few text leaves discolored, minor marginal dampstaining to the plates . FIRST EDITION, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials and large tail-pieces, 27 engraved anatomical plates by Luca Ciamberlano It is not known why this striking series of anatomical plates, attributed to the seventeenth-century Roman painter and architect Berrettini and believed to have been engraved in 1618 (this date deleted from the first plate but discernible in some copies), was left unpublished until the present edition. Ciamberlano's initials appear on plates 1 and 4. A later engraver, perhaps the editor Gaetano Petrioli, added the torsos and numerous other anatomical details, taken from Vesalius, Casserius and others, that surround each main figure of the first 20 plates, which are chiefly concerned with muscles, nerves and blood circulation. These accessories were deleted from the plates of the second and final edition, published in 1788. Choulant-Frank, pp. 235-239; Cushing B334; Heirs of Hippocrates 97. Provenance : Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate; the present owner.
