BERQUIN, Arnaud (1719?-99). A collection of plates taken from L'Ami des Enfants , Idylles and Romances , [circa 1770-1780]. Small 4° (176 x 138mm.), 205 engraved plates by Ponce, Borel, Guttenberg, Delaunay, De Longueil, Maillet, and others, mostly after Borel, Hubert, Le Barbier and Marillier (occasional light marginal spotting), dark blue morocco gilt by Chambolle-Duru, gilt triple fillets on sides, raised bands, lettered gilt in one compartment, the others elaborately decorated gilt with interlacing floral motifs, yellow morocco inner doublures with dentelle border, t.e.g. others uncut. PROOF PLATES IN FINE IMPRESSIONS, taken from three of Berquin's works. Containing elegant figures, the illustrations for Idylles are mostly based on domestic scenes in the lives of shepherds whereas in Romances they mostly depict people living in the city. "Berquin created the French equivalent of the concurrent English bourgeois morality. In effect, he unconsciously manufactured an adult literature for the young, loading the dice in favour of the values held by parents to be proper for children" ( Encyclopedia Britannica ). cf.
