And now rendered into a Better Method, by G [ ervase ] M [ arkham ], London: [Valentine Sims] for Humfrey Lownes, 1595. 3 parts in one volume with continuous pagination and signatures, 4° (171 x 127mm). Two section-titles, numerous woodcut armorial shields in part 3, with the blanks L3&4. (Lacks A1, blank save for signature, and the final blank, top margins cut quite close affecting some headlines, quire P browned, occasional discolouration). Red levant morocco gilt by Riviere, gilt edges. Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (his sale, 15 July 1946, lot 2552). THE ONLY EDITION OF GERVASE MARKHAM'S EPITOME OF THE BOOK OF ST. ALBANS, and only the second or third appearance of this prolific author. The celebrated Book of St. Albans was first printed at St. Albans in 1486 by the Schoolmaster printer who makes only one mention of the author at the end of 'Hunting'. However, her connection with that or other parts of the compilation has never become clear. She seems to have been born towards the end of the 14th century and was possibly the Prioress of Sopwell Nunnery, near St. Albans. SCHWERDT COPY. Schwerdt II, p.12; Souhart 49; STC 3314.
